White Gold

White Gold was originally created as cheaper substitute for Platinum Jewelry. It has a similar, but not exact, look to platinum. It is much lighter and more affordable. The term usually refers to an alloy, or a mixture of metals. This mixture is usually 75% gold 25% other metals such as palladium and silver for an 18k piece. At one time nickel was used as part of the alloy, but some people may get an allergic reaction to the nickel so it is not used in newer jewelry. Palladium is similar to Platinum. It is expensive, and has a high melting point, but not to the degree of Platinum. Other metals like silver, chromium, and cobalt can be used to whiten a gold mixture as well.

Caring for White Gold

Most new White Gold has a Rhodium plating. This is another metal that is similar to Platinum. It is used to give the gray looking white gold a more shiny, clean appearance. These platings can wear off over time. Every year and a half or so, this plating should be redone. You can have it done at most big jewelers for an affordable price. These platings can be misleading as they make the jewelry appear much more reflective and bright. The true color of white gold is a more gray color. It is important to keep this in mind if you are considering purchasing white gold.
