Real or Fake Silver

Silver is too soft by itself to be used for jewelry. Like other precious metals, it is mixed with other metals to from more suitable alloys. The most common is "Sterling Silver". Any jewelry in the US marked Sterling, solid, or just Silver must have at least 92.5% pure silver by law. It usually has the mark "925" on it. This can come from either the 92.5% or it's fractional representation of 925 / 1000 . Real silver is usually less shiny then fake. Some products claiming to be silver are really silver plated. The silver can chip off of these items and the real metal will be revealed. This can cause rashes for some people.
